Night Sky / Milky Way Field Trip

Sunday night , July 23,2017 at 7:00 pm

Rescheduled for Thursday, July 27, 2017

This is suppose to be one of the best dates this year to shoot the Milky Way, a New Moon, fair weather and clear skies.  On this outing we will concentrate on the night sky, no Mustang cars  or pup tents in the foreground!

Sunset is at 8:40 pm, but to allow enough time  we will meet in the  BiLo Grocery Store parking lot(41 Forest Gate Drive) at 7:00pm.   It will be  about a 45 min. drive to Black Balsum Knob.  We will stop at Graveyard Fields for the sunset and a restroom break.

From the BiLo parking lot drive west on Hwy 276 past Looking Glass Falls to the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Turn left at the BRP drive S.W. to the Graveyard Fields overlook.  From there continue S.W. to the first paved road on the right.  This is the road to Black Balsum Knob.  We will stop at the first three pulloffs on the right.  There is enough room for SIX cars  here.  We will have a 180 degree view from here.  South, East and North.  Traffic should be very light.  If we have more than SIX cars we will continue to the upper parking area and should have plenty of room and a look westward.

We have tips for shooting night skies the April IN FOCUS Newsletter on the CCoH website. Here is a page of links to other articles on shooting night skies!

Suggestions: a wide angle lens, cable release, tripod, water, snacks, light jacket, flashlight and a chair.

Please RSVP Mike Merrill at [email protected]

As with all of our field trips, we require a completely filled out Release Agreement for each person attending our organized events. It is important that you have it downloaded, printed and filled out before you leave home so we will not be holding up our departure from the BiLo meet up site.
