]]>Dennis was raised in the far south side of Chicago. He was always involved in “artsy” activities and in his teens and early twenties spent much of his time as a free-lance drummer working with many top groups and individuals of that era. It wasn’t until the year 2K that he began his photographic endeavors. It was an Olympus point-and-shoot that he first picked up. The point-and-shoot camera didn’t last too long before Dennis purchased his first DSLR, an early-release Canon. It was then that his photographic journey began to flourish and continues to this day.

]]>Ken Weaver, born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, finally found the beauty of the Carolinas. Ken never took photography seriously until 2008 when he retired. For what seemed like the first time in his life he had the time and resources to focus on photography as an avocation. As Ken honed his skill with the technical aspects of photography, he began to see the artistic attributes of a fine photograph. Now each encounter with his camera becomes the challenge of capturing a beautiful and meaningful image.

He was introduced to serious photography when he joined the Photography Artist Network (PAN) in Riverside, California in 2008. Later he began to hone his skills through education and training with the Boise Camera Club in Idaho. Ken later became members of the Robson Ranch Photo Club, the Denton Camera Club, and the Heard Nature Photographers Club, all in Texas. Since 2015 he has been a member of the Camera Club of Hendersonville, NC, and served as the President of that club for four years.

Ken is also a founding member of the Carolina Photographic Artist Network.

Ken joined the Photographic Society of America(PSA) in 2011,and holds the distinction of Master 2(MPSA-2.) Ken is also a PSA Travel Aide for the Blue Ridge/Smoky Mountains area of North Carolina.

]]>I first became interested in photography in the 1990’s when my sons, Devin, Collin, and Ben began to show an interest in the graphic arts. It was a way for us to do something together and learn from one another. After Collin talked me into converting a spare bathroom into a darkroom for his high-school photography work, I got hooked on making images and have been doing so ever since. My background is in pharmacy, and my career was in outcomes research and post-marketing product surveillance for Pfizer. Photography was one of those things that helped keep work stress at a manageable level. I guess as a consequence of my research background, I look at the camera as a digital imaging experimentation device. I like to see how much I can push the technology to make unusual and interesting photographs. Most of my photographic exploration is in infrared, pinhole, and specialty lens utilization with a digital camera converted to full spectrum capability. Most of my photographs undergo a fair amount of post-processing in a variety of software packages.

]]>From previous interest surveys, it was determined that the majority of CCoH members felt one of the best ways to meet and mix with fellow members is through participation in field trips. As such, CCoH actively strives to schedule a number of field trip outings to interesting places each year. These outings are where we shoot, share, learn and socialize as a club. The videos contained within this gallery are from various field trips held throughout the 2022 calendar year. Please open each collection to view a video of that month's program entries.

]]>I have always enjoyed the visual arts, but never thought of photography as an art until I met my husband, Jim Pierson. Jim introduced me to the art of photography, and some of my favorite dates involved going through his catalog of pictures or accompanying him on a photoshoot. I’ve come to see that photographs are more than just a chemical or digital record of people and places. Like other artists, a photographer can use elements such as light, color and composition to tell a story, evoke an emotion, or convey an idea. I love the way that photographers can share their own unique perspective of the world through their images. When we moved to the beautiful mountains of western NC and joined the Camera Club of Hendersonville, Jim encouraged me to try my own hand at photography. I’m definitely a novice, but the club's field trips, workshops and meetings have expanded my interest and skill. I hope that sharing some of my photos will encourage other beginners to join the club, and start creating images of the world as they experience it.

]]>My first ‘real’ piece of gear was a 35mm SLR Minolta SRT-101 film camera, circa 1975, which I still have today. After retiring from a long career in IT and moving from the midwest to WNC in 2016, I decided it was time to get off the ‘A’ mode on my Canon Rebel and take the plunge into what I hope will be a life-long learning experience of creating images. I especially enjoy landscape, travel and family photography.

My best move to improve my photography was to join the Camera Club of Hendersonville (CCoH) in October of 2018 and participate in their varied programs, field trips, workshops and print competitions. The CCoH provides training, mentoring, inspiration and opportunities to learn from some very talented photographers and artists. To give back to the CCoH, I served as the Program Director from 2021 to 2023.

]]>Like many in this club my journey in photography started with rolls of film, Nikon kit and a basic basement darkroom many years ago. This humble beginning was interrupted by raising a family and having to go to work! Taking pictures was enjoyable but looking back I realise I didn’t really know much about photography in the early days. Yes, I could take a picture and develop the negative into a print, but appreciating the exposure triangle, composition, tonality, the colour temperature of light, the golden hour, the blue hour, studio lighting, patterns, colours and textures and on and on has only come over time.

The journey is (hopefully) far from over and I enjoy shooting whatever is in front of my camera. It seems the more you learn the more there is to explore and try. It can be frustrating, but mostly it is fun. Susi and I are fortunate to be able to travel and photograph and have enjoyed the friendships of many of the like-minded photographers we have met along the way.We are pleased to be members of CCoH.

The Associate level distinction recognizes a high degree of proficiency and a high technical and visual competence in a particular category. Greg has presented his work in portfolio competition and the display panel can be found under Commendations. ]]>Tom Rhyne is a retired Professor of Physical Chemistry who has studied and practiced photography for fifty years, beginning as a film and slide photographer in the 1960s. A Nikon shooter, he has more recently developed his art using digital photography equipment and techniques and digital processing with Adobe Lightroom. He is a member of the Camera Club of Hendersonville and the Carolina Nature Photographers’ Association and is a former member of the Photography Club of Sun City-Hilton Head and the Photography Club of Beaufort.

]]>I have always admired the work that my brother and others created with their cameras. However, it was not until I retired a few years ago that I set out on my own path of discovery. I soon found that there was much to learn and I enjoy that there was always something new to conquer. I joined an online photography group, which catapulted my learning curve and continues to be a source of inspiration and growth. I also joined CCoH and found new friendships and a sense of community around shared interests. My main focus is landscape, travel and night photography, though I don’t rule out any genre.
